RELEASES FROM ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC STATE UNIVERSITY:
PIRATES DO THE DOUBLE ! No. 1 Armstrong Men Blank No. 2 West Florida, 5-0, For Men’s Tennis Title
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The top-ranked and undefeated Armstrong Atlantic State University men’s tennis team captured its third NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis National Championship with a 5-0 win over No. 2 West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky.
The Pirates (30-0) returned to the top of DII men’s tennis after also capturing titles in 2008 and 2009, doing so in dominating fashion on the scoreboard – although the singles play was much tigher than the final score would indicate. West Florida ended its season at 28-3 after winning 19 in a row coming into the Championship match.
Armstrong got out to a 3-0 lead after doubles on the Argos, picking up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles in a showdown of the top-ranked duo of Georgi Rumenov and Mikk Irdoja against the No. 2-ranked duo of Kevin Ducros and Bruno Savi. The Pirates won fairly easily at No. 2 doubles with No. 17-ranked Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia defeating No. 18-ranked Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev and then collected an 8-6 win by Eudaldo Bonetand Matus Mydla at No. 3 doubles over Mike Lue and Domenico Sano.
In singles play, the Pirates won all six first sets, making it look like it would be an easy 5-0 win, but West Florida battled back in the second sets on all courts. No. 12-ranked Matus Mydla came up with the first point, getting a 6-2, 6-4 win over Leandro Ferreira at No. 4 singles. Top-ranked Georgi Rumenov then finished off the win, downing No. 7 Kevin Ducros, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.
This is the third time that the Armstrong men and women have both won the NCAA DII National Championship and this is also the first time that both teams have run the table, finishing undefeated for the 2012 season.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! No. 3 Armstrong Notches 7th Title With 5-2 Win Over No. 1 BYU-Hawaii
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Kathleen Henry captured a second-set tiebreaker to lift the No. 3-ranked Pirates to their seventh NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis National Championship in a 5-2 win over top-ranked BYU-Hawaii on Saturday morning at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky.
The Pirates completed an undefeated season, going 29-0 in winning their fourth NCAA DII Women’s Tennis title in the last five seasons. BYU-Hawaii – gunning for their eighth title – suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 29-1. The two teams now are tied for the most DII women’s tennis titles in NCAA history with seven.
BYU-Hawaii got out to a very quick doubles lead and took No. 1 doubles behind the top-ranked doubles duo of Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu, 8-1, over second-ranked Barbora Krtickova and Aleksandra Filipovski. The Pirates got their first doubles point at No. 3 doubles as No. 17-ranked Kathleen Henry and Clara Perez notched an 8-5 win over Marika Kobayashi and Tanja Rebholz, then the No. 11-ranked duo of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa convered a late break to come up with an 8-5 win over No. 5-ranked Yuan Jia and Marietta Tuionetoa at No. 2 doubles and give Armstrong the crucial 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Armstrong got off to a fantastic start in singles play, winning five of six first sets in the singles matches. No. 30-ranked Clara Perez picked up the first point in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marietta Tuionetoa at No. 6 singles, then No. 21-ranked Marlen Hacke notched a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win at No. 5 singles put the Pirates just one singles match away from the title.
BYU-Hawaii did not go down quietly. Top-ranked Hwang prevailed in a Top 10 battle at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 6-ranked Barbora Krtickova, and the Seasiders rallied for a second set win at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
That’s when Henry, down 5-3 at one point in the second set, battled back with a break to force a tiebreaker. Henry raced out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak, then watched a shot go long on match point from BYU-Hawaii’s Tanja Rebholz for a 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker and the national title for the Pirates.
The appearance in the national championship was the 15th for the Pirates and the other national championship titles came in 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2008-10.

MAMMOTH: Djokovic, Federer in heavyweight semis
Angelique Kerber celebrates after beating Petra Kvitova 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 at the Rome Masters on Friday. Reuters pic
ROME: NOVAK Djokovic and Roger Federer will clash for the 25th time in the Rome Masters semi-finals while Rafael Nadal also progressed, ensuring the big three all made the last four of this crucial French Open warm-up.
Defending champion Djokovic, the top seed, fought through the first set, before racing away in the second to beat French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-1.
Federer, fresh from his Madrid Masters triumph last weekend, followed the script with a 6-1, 6-2 demolition of Italian Andreas Seppi in just 53 minutes, with the Swiss third seed winning 14 of the first 15 points.
Second seed Nadal, meanwhile, got the better of Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych, grinding out a 6-4, 7-5 win and will meet fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.
“It was a very good match for me. From the start I played aggressive,” said Federer.
“The goals have to be the same against Djokovic — take it to him and play my game.”
Rome is one of the few big events Federer has not won, losing finals in 2003 and 2006.
But the Swiss star, who hasn’t played Djokovic since his marathon US Open semi-final defeat last year, showed his clay game is nearing perfection, just a week before the start of the French Open.
Djokovic was tested early on by Tsonga in a first set filled with five breaks of serve. But after winning the opener in nearly an hour, Tsonga’s defences collapsed as the top seed came home for his 29th win of the season.
“In the second set I played one of the best sets on clay this year,” said Serb star Djokovic.
“This is encouraging for the challenges ahead. With Roland Garros coming, I’m playing and feeling better in every match.”
Nadal will face off in the final four against compatriot and sixth seed Ferrer, who beat French 15th seed Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
“I played one of my best matches on clay against a difficult opponent,” said five-time Rome winner Nadal.
Nadal and Ferrer went toe-to-toe less than three weeks ago, with Nadal winning the final to take his seventh trophy on home clay in Barcelona.
In the women’s event, Serena Williams withdrew yesterday prior to the semi-final with China’s Li Na, with the American admitting she just had been feeling small twinges and will be fine for the French Open.
“I’m fine, I’ll be 100% for the French,” said 30-year-old Williams, who added she pulled out to make sure she didn’t aggravate the injury.
“I’ve been feeling a little pain this week and I have a huge schedule coming up,” said the American who was on a 17- match win streak on clay.
Eeighth seed Li Na could not have asked for better timing as she heads into her Roland Garros title defence beginning in eight days.
Serena, the ninth seed, advanced to the semi-finals when 4-0 against Italian opponent Flavia Pennetta who withdrew with a right wrist injury.
Li Na fought off a case of late jitters to beat Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Defending champion Maria Sharapova shattered hopes of a Williams sisters double act by breezing past Venus Williams 6-4, 6-3 on Friday to reach the semi-finals.
Maria, seeded second, and the winner on clay in Stuttgart last month, demolished the elder Williams, who ended her afternoon with a fifth double-fault on match point to exit the event she won 13 years ago as a teenager.
Maria will face Germany’s Angelique Kerber who beat fourth seeded Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-1 with the Czech player treated on court and off for an abdominal injury. AFP

Jesse Witten is the man to beat in the men’s open singles of the 43rd annual City of Naples Tennis Championships. And why shouldn’t he be? He’s the No. 1 seed and his many successes on tennis courts throughout the world give him a distinct advantage over the others still alive in the May-long event at Cambier Park.
Through two rounds, Witten has yet to lose a game, much less a set.
Thursday evening’s feature action was to showcase Witten against fifth-seeded Jicam Zaatini in the semifinal of the top half of the draw. In the bottom half, it was to be Jonathan David, the No. 3 seed, against the second-seeded Gordon Watson.
Witten is playing open doubles with Tye Myers, and the two already have earned a berth in the finals. They await the winner of Ito Abougzir/J.C. Webber against Jack Haffey/Oliver Landert.
The stage is now set for the women’s open singles finale. It will pit top-seeded Jennifer Powell against Fallon Burger. Both finalists earned walkover victories in the semifinals due to emergencies or injuries to their opponents.

Tennis greats John McEnroe and Andre Agassi took to their small global communications pulpit to blast the tennis establishment during a full-scale stump for the virtues of World Team Tennis during a media conference conducted by team tennis organizers this week. Amidst the flurry of jabs at tennis’ muckety-mucks, the New York Sportimes announced Agassi will join McEnroe this summer in an attempt to raise funds for McEnroe’s now-annual “give-back” to the New York City tennis programs that transformed him from an unknown Douglaston, Queens teenager to one of the greatest athletes and winners the sports world has ever seen.
The two tennis Hall of Famers, along with women’s tennis great Martina Hingis, will compete in a World Team Tennis match between the New York Sportimes and Boston Lobsters on July 19 with proceeds to be donated to the “Johnny Mac” Tennis Project (JMTP). The charity program provides scholarships, coaching, transportation and other financial assistance to qualified young tennis players in the greater New York area. The special, one-time performance by Agassi will take place at Sportime Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York City.
“Back in the ’70s, when World Team Tennis started and Billie Jean King spearheaded the league, the matches were played in places like Madison Square Garden,” noted McEnroe, a tennis participant at every level of the game from exhibitions, to team tennis to Davis Cup to the Grand Slam tour. “The top players in the world were all playing, and I remember that they didn’t let Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg play in the French Open one year because they were playing team tennis.
“Now, the powers that be in tennis have made little effort to give this, perhaps, what it deserves,” said McEnroe. “It would be beneficial to all to give this a real chance, and I don’t think it’s being given that chance. Billy Jean has been battling for it for years and she’s trying to get a place in the schedule for it for years. It’s a fun (event) to play and it gives tennis something for kids to look at it in a slightly different way than being out there by yourself. Certainly, there’s a lot more work to be done,” added McEnroe of his noteworthy belief on the importance of team tennis in the sport’s hierarchy.
“I’ve always loved team tennis and I’ve always thought there’s a huge place for it in our sport,” said Agassi during a conference call with a global contingent of tennis and sports writers. “I’ve always loved the format but John can speak more of its history.”
Last year, McEnroe faced tennis legend Bjorn Borg in the first JMTP benefit in front of a sold-out Sportimes Stadium crowd. Johnny Mac Tennis Project recipients train at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy which is now in its second year at Sportime Randall’s Island.
“This year’s Johnny Mac Tennis Project Night will highlight three of the most popular and exciting players ever to play the sport,” said Sportime Clubs and NY Sportimes CEO Claude Okin. “Andre Agassi has become a notable humanitarian and ambassador for tennis as a life changing opportunity. We are thrilled that he will be part of this great night and join our efforts to improve the lives of young people and young players here in New York City. Hopefully one will become the next John McEnroe in the not too distant future.”
Since its launch in 2010, the John McEnroe Tennis Academy has outgrown its original home on NYC’s Randall’s Island to expand to create two new annexes of the academy, scheduled to open on Long Island and in Westchester County this fall. The Academy’s expansion will give young people who live in nearby suburbs a chance to train while they attend their own schools, much like McEnroe and his siblings did in Queens.
“We need to continue to find good athletes and expose them to tennis, and that’s what this program has done,” said McEnroe. “The tri-state area has thousands of kids, some of whom will excel in tennis if we give them the chance. That’s what we are doing, giving them a chance to have well-rounded lives as they play the great game of tennis.”
Part of the opportunity born through the McEnroe program will come in the form of scholarships to be partially funded from the July 19 event. Ticket prices for the event are steep but tax deductions are to be considered. Tickets for the benefit night on July 19 and for all NY Sportimes home matches can be purchased by calling 1-888-WTT-NYC1 or online.

After capturing the Madrid Open
title and knowing he will climb back above Rafa Nadal to number
two in the world, Roger Federer has set his sights on reclaiming
the top ranking.
The resurgent 30-year-old Swiss came from a set down to beat
Tomas Berdych in the Madrid final on Sunday, a fourth title of
the year and a third in the Spanish capital that put him level
on 20 Masters crowns with great rival Nadal.
Success in one of the upcoming grand slams could catapult
him above Novak Djokovic to number one, a position he last held
in May 2010, and he would then equal, and almost certainly
break, his idol Pete Sampras‘s record of 286 weeks at the top.
A buoyant Federer told a news conference that would be
“absolutely amazing”.
“Back then I was just trying to stay world number one and I
never really looked at Pete’s record that much,” he said.
“I guess I could have chased it a few years ago, just really
trying to beat that record,” added the 16-times grand slam
singles champion.
“It’s no secret for any player out there that you’d rather
be number one than number two.
“But I look at the long term, maybe if I wasn’t good enough
to break that record then maybe I never will be.”
NIGGLING INJURIES
Before Madrid, Federer had not played for six weeks since
losing to Andy Roddick in Miami, deciding he needed some time
away from tennis to recharge his batteries and rid himself of
one or two niggling injuries.
He has played some of his best tennis in years in winning
his four titles this year, including the Indian Wells Masters,
and will bid for a second French Open crown in Paris starting
later this month after his triumph in 2009, which was also the
year he last won in Madrid.
“I don’t need to beat every record Pete set, he’s my idol
after all and I’m just happy I’m that close already,” Federer
said.
“But it’s exciting times ahead for me. Winning so many
tournaments and playing so well obviously I do believe I can win
the grand slams.
“But I know the difficulty of the French Open and the focus
will be a lot on Novak because he’s going for four in a row and
on Rafa because he’s the defending champion. It’s going to be an
exciting tournament.”
Federer said equalling Nadal’s record of Masters titles was
not such a big deal for him given that the series has only been
running for a relatively short time.
“That one for me is just a number at the moment,” he said.
“It’s amazing how many Rafa has got in such a short time and
it’s nice to win another one,” he said.
“I have won three of the last four now and it’s been a great
streak and that’s what I look at.”
